This will keep you up to date on our progress and, in the future, products, of our little farm in on Keuka Lake in New York.
Keuka Farms is a 16 acre parcel on the east side of Keuka lake. We have a year round 2 bedroom, 2 bath home on the land, a large 2 car garage and attached 2 story carriage house (basically an unfinished garage!) There are 3 ponds, one of which is stocked with bass, cat fish and sunfish. It has it's own well and septic. On another part of the property, is a full length 3 bedroom 1 bath trailer that also has its own well and septic system.
While it may take some time (and money!), we have several goals for our venture:
Be energy self sustaining with a combination of wind, solar and microhydro power
Be more self sufficient with our fruit and vegetable products
Raise saleable crops such as blueberries, raspberries, and grapes
Raise goats for goat milk, goat cheese, and goat milk soap products
Develope aquaculture in the ponds and raise perch and crawfish
Raise chickens, geese, and ducks for eggs and meat
Be financially self sustaining with this enterprise
Have a lot of fun doing all this!
Keuka Lake is located in the Finger Lakes area (Southern Tier area) of Western New York, about 90 miles south of Rochester. This area is known for the beauty of it's 13 deep glacier carved fresh water lakes. Hunting, fishing and all lake and water sports are popular here. It is also the second largest wine area (after Napa Valley in California) in the country. There are 11 wineries around Keuka Lake alone.
We are on the east side of Keuka Lake (pronounced Key-U-Ka or Q-Ka).
Here are a few websites that highlight the fingerlakes area:
http://www.wanetawebcam.com/ Waneta Lake is about 5 miles due East of us. We are always checking this site to watch weather conditions at our place.
